A trip to the Red Light District...
To a lot of people who haven't been there, Amsterdam is synonymous with coffee houses legally selling drugs and red light district. I was naively expecting an ultra-liberal society with this forwardness showing on streets. My first 5 minute walk in the Dam area didn't disappoint me - I came across more buildings with titles beginning with "sex" than I can hope to anywhere in a US. So, my first long chat with a local Amsterdammer disappointed me - I realized that she (and most Dutch people in general) have similar priorities in life than any of us, and don't even notice or think about things that grabs the attention of tourists!
I landed on Friday evening keen on seeing things I had heard or read about (no, I don't the pun here--its not my fault that "red" and past tense "read" are homophones).

Amsterdam to cut back on brothels
The city of Amsterdam is to close 51 of the window brothels in its famous red light district. This is about one-third of the total.
The city has reached a 25m euro deal to buy many of the premises and turn them into shops or housing.
The mayor of Amsterdam, Job Cohen, said that although prostitution was legal in the Netherlands, there was too much of the sex trade in the city centre.
He also said that the trade involved exploitation and trafficking of women, and other kinds of criminal activity.

Experiences with the window brothel girls
I had never been to a sex worker before this trip to the Netherlands, and had never before paid for sex except perhaps in the less-direct ways typical of the male role in heterosexual courtship rituals.
On the one hand, relating this experience seems worthwhile and valuable, like a travelogue introducing those on the home front to the adventures of a wanderer in lands infrequently visited. On the other hand, those men who haven't been to a sex worker probably have some disgust toward the idea that would prejudice them toward reading my tale with either red-faced indignancy or secret, shameful envy; and those who have been can at best be somewhat amused at the ignorant wonder of a tyro john. Women's reactions may vary more -- some may be threatened, some may be offended, some may wonder if they should ask for a raise after finding out how much these window brothel girls ask for it.
