To a lot of people who haven't been there, Amsterdam is synonymous with coffee houses legally selling drugs and red light district. I was naively expecting an ultra-liberal society with this forwardness showing on streets. My first 5 minute walk in the Dam area didn't disappoint me - I came across more buildings with titles beginning with "sex" than I can hope to anywhere in a US. So, my first long chat with a local Amsterdammer disappointed me - I realized that she (and most Dutch people in general) have similar priorities in life than any of us, and don't even notice or think about things that grabs the attention of tourists!
The Red Light District in Amsterdam is famous for the many Amsterdam girls behind red lid windows.
These window brothels are unique for Amsterdam and many visitors look in amazement at the many beautiful girls.
Because of the tolerant attitude towards prostitution (it's legal), girls from many countries are working here.
Some girls prefer to work as a escort. And although the Red Light District is a more safe environment for the girls as well as the clients, working for an escort service offers more anonymity.
Tourist authorities acknowledge the 700-year-old red-light district -- a maze of narrow alleys and canals lined with shops, girls and marijuana-selling "coffee shops" -- is as much of a draw as other attractions such as the Van Gogh museum or the Anne Frank House.
Every night visitors throng the streets, looking at women sitting behind huge red-lit windows, and who sell their services for as little as €50. Amsterdam Red Light District prices are low compared to most other western cities.
If you want to take pictures yourself in this area, be very careful. You will see "No Photos" stickers everywhere and most girls hate to be photographed. If you get caught by them, verbal abuse is the least you can expect and you won't be the first person whose camera ends up in one of the canals.
On the one hand, relating this experience seems worthwhile and valuable, like a travelogue introducing those on the home front to the adventures of a wanderer in lands infrequently visited. On the other hand, those men who haven't been to a sex worker probably have some disgust toward the idea that would prejudice them toward reading my tale with either red-faced indignancy or secret, shameful envy; and those who have been can at best be somewhat amused at the ignorant wonder of a tyro john. Women's reactions may vary more -- some may be threatened, some may be offended, some may wonder if they should ask for a raise after finding out how much these window brothel girls ask for it.
The Amsterdam Red Light District covers a large area of the oldest part of the city. The buildings are tall, thin and crowd together, overlooking the tree lined canals. The Red Light District Amsterdam is a beautiful area and the later it gets, the busier it gets.
And the darker it gets, the more obvious the glow of the fluorescent red lights above the many windows in the area becomes.
Dating back to the 14th Century when sailors arrived in need of some female company, the redlight area is full of sex shops, brothels, gay bars, cinemas, hotels and different kinds of museums. This infamous part of the city is a major tourist attraction. Each year, millions of visitors come to see this vibrant and exciting part of Amsterdam.
