This is a slide show of the Amsterdam Red Light District. Pictures of girls  and "window shopping" in the red light area give you an idea why so many people visit this oldest part of Amsterdam.

Tourist authorities acknowledge the 700-year-old red-light district -- a maze of narrow alleys and canals lined with shops, girls and marijuana-selling "coffee shops" -- is as much of a draw as other attractions such as the Van Gogh museum or the Anne Frank House.

Every night visitors throng the streets, looking at women sitting behind huge red-lit windows, and who sell their services for as little as €50. Amsterdam Red Light District prices are low compared to most other western cities.

If you want to take pictures yourself in this area, be very careful. You will see "No Photos" stickers everywhere and most girls hate to be photographed. If you get caught by them, verbal abuse is the least you can expect and you won't be the first person whose camera ends up in one of the canals.

Brothels become art studios

brothels become art studios
Red lights still glow in the small rooms along one of Amsterdam's inner city alleys, but the some beds are gone and artists are working on creative installations where prostitutes used to entertain clients.

As part of efforts to revitalise its centre and rein in a mushrooming red light district, the city of Amsterdam in cooperation with a housing corporation has acquired some former brothel rooms and rented them out to artists as studios.

Brothels take city to court

red light district girlOwners of Amsterdam brothels in the red light district are taking the city council to court over its decision to close a number of sex businesses and brothels in amsterdam.

Amsterdam's mayor says the sex industry attracts criminality.

The council is demanding the closure of 33 brothels, which account for around a third of the district's sex businesses, by the end of the year (2006).

The sex workers union says the move will force many women to work illegally.

Prostitution was legalised in the Netherlands five years ago.
