A trip to the Red Light District...

Girl in window brothelTo a lot of people who haven't been there, Amsterdam is synonymous with coffee houses legally selling drugs and red light district. I was naively expecting an ultra-liberal society with this forwardness showing on streets. My first 5 minute walk in the Dam area didn't disappoint me - I came across more buildings with titles beginning with "sex" than I can hope to anywhere in a US. So, my first long chat with a local Amsterdammer disappointed me - I realized that she (and most Dutch people in general) have similar priorities in life than any of us, and don't even notice or think about things that grabs the attention of tourists!

I landed on Friday evening keen on seeing things I had heard or read about (no, I don't the pun here--its not my fault that "red" and past tense "read" are homophones).

The Red Light District of Amsterdam

A brief History

The red light district is very close to the Dam Square. Here Amsterdam started of as a settlement around a dam in the river Amstel. Amsterdam started to develop at the end of the 12th century. It is first mentioned in a document dated October 27th 1275.

Amsterdam started to flourish late 14th and 15th century. The fast growth formed the foundation for the "Golden Age". In the Middle Ages, Amsterdam was a city of stone monasteries and wooden houses. Only a few of these buildings still exist. The main ones are the "Old Church" (around which the red light district develloped) and the "New Church". The "New Church" is located at Dam Square and the "Old Church" in the middle of what is now the Red Light District.
