A trip to the Red Light District...

Girl in window brothelTo a lot of people who haven't been there, Amsterdam is synonymous with coffee houses legally selling drugs and red light district. I was naively expecting an ultra-liberal society with this forwardness showing on streets. My first 5 minute walk in the Dam area didn't disappoint me - I came across more buildings with titles beginning with "sex" than I can hope to anywhere in a US. So, my first long chat with a local Amsterdammer disappointed me - I realized that she (and most Dutch people in general) have similar priorities in life than any of us, and don't even notice or think about things that grabs the attention of tourists!

I landed on Friday evening keen on seeing things I had heard or read about (no, I don't the pun here--its not my fault that "red" and past tense "read" are homophones).

Amsterdam Girls

Amsterdam Girls

window girlThe Red Light District in Amsterdam is famous for the many Amsterdam girls behind red lid windows.
These window brothels are unique for Amsterdam and many visitors look in amazement at the many beautiful girls.

Because of the tolerant attitude towards prostitution (it's legal), girls from many countries are working here.

Some girls prefer to work as a escort. And although the Red Light District is a more safe environment for the girls as well as the clients, working for an escort service offers more anonymity.

Designers are moving into former brothels in Amsterdam

redlight fashionIn the heart of Amsterdam's red-light area, prostitutes have been kicked out to make way for a controversial new scheme promoting the city's young fashion talent.

The red-light district of Amsterdam, famous for its sex shops, brothels and "coffee shops", is relaunching itself... as a fashion hotspot. Last month a project called Redlight Fashion Amsterdam offered a group of young Dutch designers the chance to live and work rent-free for a year in the former establishments of prostitutes; their designs will be also be available to buy in a gallery store.

The project sits at the very heart of the Wallen (red-light district) and the result is a radical mix of hip, young Dutch designers and members of the world's oldest profession. Bathed in the neon glare of the sex shops, the work of these designers vies for space between windows displaying girls dressed in eye-popping underwear.

Experiences with the window brothel girls

I had never been to a sex worker before this trip to the Netherlands, and had never before paid for sex except perhaps in the less-direct ways typical of the male role in heterosexual courtship rituals.

window brothel girlsOn the one hand, relating this experience seems worthwhile and valuable, like a travelogue introducing those on the home front to the adventures of a wanderer in lands infrequently visited. On the other hand, those men who haven't been to a sex worker probably have some disgust toward the idea that would prejudice them toward reading my tale with either red-faced indignancy or secret, shameful envy; and those who have been can at best be somewhat amused at the ignorant wonder of a tyro john. Women's reactions may vary more -- some may be threatened, some may be offended, some may wonder if they should ask for a raise after finding out how much these window brothel girls ask for it.

Home

amsterdam red light district windowsThe Amsterdam Red Light District covers a large area of the oldest part of the city. The buildings are tall, thin and crowd together, overlooking the tree lined canals.

The Red Light District Amsterdam is a beautiful area and the later it gets, the busier it gets.

And the darker it gets, the more obvious the glow of the fluorescent red lights above the many windows in the area becomes.

Dating back to the 14th Century when sailors arrived in need of some female company, the redlight area is full of sex shops, brothels, gay bars, cinemas, hotels and different kinds of museums. This infamous part of the city is a major tourist attraction. Each year, millions of visitors come to see this vibrant and exciting part of Amsterdam.

Licensing order for escort services

window brothelAmsterdam, famed for its red light prostitution district, gave escort services six weeks to apply for official city licenses. The girls working in window brothels are not affected by the new rules.

The order is part of a campaign to combat money laundering, human trafficking and abuse in the sex industry, which was legalized in the Netherlands in 2000.

To obtain a license, escort agencies must have a fixed address and telephone number, and must guarantee that prostitutes are healthy and work in safe conditions, the city said.

Escort agencies have six weeks to comply — or face being shut down.

Window brothels replaced by Redlight Fashion

Window brothels replaced by Redlight FashionFor years, the brothels' large street-side windows have showcased women of all races, wearing minute bits of clothing as they preened and beckoned customers. But in some windows, women have recently been replaced by plastic mannequins in designer clothes (Redlight Fashion).

The city council has voted to clean up the historic but notorious district. The city is buying up brothels, and it has lent the first 18 windows and boudoirs for one year to young designers and photographers.
